Hibernate Recipe - Implementing equals() and hashCode()
From: Kevin Taylor,
Your Guide to Focus on Java.
Problem
When using Hibernate to lazily load persistent objects, hibernate (obviously) proxy objects stand-in for any uninitialized persistent objects. These proxy objects are not your class: They are a bytecode-generated class that mimics your real class. This can create subtle bugs in your code, if your persistent object's equals() and hashCode() are not ready to fend off this Hibernate anomally.
You'll typically see these issues when you have retrieved two objects with database equality (same primary key) from two different Hibernate sessions and then you try to compare them via equals(). For instance, object1 lives in a List and you make a list.contains(object2) call. You need this to return true if the objects represent the same row in your database.
This problem of proxy identity becomes even more difficult when your persistent objects are subclassed.
Recipe
There is no definite way to implement equals() and hashCode() in Hibernate. If you never use your persistent objects across multiple sessions or you never use lazy loading, then you can stick with the default Object implementations. Otherwise, here are safe equals() and hashCode() implementations that I have used successfully.
public class Person {
// ...
public boolean equals(Object o) {
if (this == o)
return true;
if (!(HibernateProxyHelper.getClassWithoutInitializingProxy(o)
instanceof Person))
return false;
final Person person = (Person) o;
if (null != id ?
!id.equals(person.getId()) :
null != person.getId())
return false;
return true;
}
public int hashCode() {
return null != id ? id.hashCode() : super.hashCode();
}
}
|
Discussion
This is a classic "Effective Java"-style equals() implementation except for two Hibernate-fending refinements. The first is the call to HibernateProxyHelper.getClassWithoutInitializingProxy(o) in the instanceof check. This ensures that you are checking the underlying persistent class in the instanceof comparison (and NOT the generated proxy class!). If o is a proxy, it will return the underlying persistent class that it is mimicing. If o is one of your real persistent objects, it will return that object's class. The downside of this call is that your models are now "Hibernate aware."
The other refinement we've made to a classic equals implementation is the use of person.getId() instead of person.id. This is, again, to compensate for the fact that person may be a Hibernate proxy. A hibernate proxy doesn't have initialized fields. In order to get the id attribute, you must access it through the getter.

How To Write White Papers
By Valeria Vegas
If you’re a technical writer or an MBA, eventually you are going to need to know how to write white papers. In the business world, white papers are a marketing tool. In fact, many project leaders and COs use them as their first source of information when it comes to making decisions about which companies with whom they should invest or partner.
That’s because a company’s white paper is a thorough investigation into their selling points. They are meant to influence a potential client positively and either establish their authority on what the company needs or to inform the potential client company about a problem they should be concerned about that the white paper company intends to fix.
In the following sections discussing the components of this technical writing, the term ‘the white paper company’ refers to the company you are describing (or working for) in the white paper. ‘The target company’ refers to who you expect to read the white paper and be persuaded by it that ‘the white paper company’ is who they need to do business with.
Include the following in your white paper:
- Problems and issues currently affecting the market and industry. First thing, briefly discuss what the target company is dealing with – competition, financial issues, economy, laws, etc – that could impact them negatively. Let them know that the white paper company has an intimate knowledge with what they’re going through.
- Solutions to each problem and issue. The point of bringing up the problems is to explain how the white paper company can provide solutions for the target company. Discuss how the white paper company can turn each problem, issue, or threatening trend into a positive source of income.
- Description of solution aspects. If, for example, the white paper company provides system databases, then describe the technology behind their particular system database solution. Don’t lose the target company because the CO reading the paper doesn’t understand how the technology works. However, if everything is standard and basic, don’t waste time re-defining the obvious.
- Show how the white paper company will serve the target company in particular. Specifically apply the white paper company’s solution to the target company’s problem. Why is the white paper company better than its competitors? Why should the target company choose them? Why now?
- Examples, benefits, case studies. It’s more of the same but a thorough example of how another company benefited from utilizing the solution suggested. Outline what specific things the target company has to gain.
- Graphics, charts, images. Anything to make it even more clear in eye popping color what exactly it is that the target company is missing and how the white paper company can fill that hole. Visual effects are more memorable and stand out on the desk top better than plain text.
- Give a list of companies with whom the white paper company could create a partnership with in order to benefit the target company. If, for example, another company makes a certain software that would be perfect for the target company’s needs if combined with the white paper company’s product, then that company would be on the list with a brief description why.
- Summary. This is the last thing on the white paper and is usually a bullet point summation of everything you wrote. It may feel like you’re writing and re-writing the same information and, in a way, you are. But each section adds more dimension and with repetition comes persuasion and clarity.

Tips on Résumé Writing
Before you can begin creating a winning resume you must first understand what a resume's is and what it's designed to do. Quite simply, a resume is a summary of your qualifications. The French word résumé means "to summarize". Your resume should describe you, show what you can do and how an employer can benefit from it.
An effective resume will not get you a job all on its own. It will pique a prospective employers interest in you and make you stand out from the crowd, ulitmately leading to a job interview.
Do's and Dont's
Do's
Address the employer's needs:-
Employers hire people who can fill specific needs. Communicate that you are that person and you have the skills and knowledge to solve their particular problem.
Show the employer how he/she will benefit:-
Stress your accomplishments and show the employer you're an excellent prospect with talent to offer. Provide results-oriented data that proves you've handled previous jobs well and have consistently contributed to the success of the company.
Be clear and concise.:-
Employers sort through piles of resumes everyday and really only glance at a resume for about 30 seconds or less. Make your information clear, sharp, and easy to read to capture and keep their attention.
Proofread your work.:-
A poorly written resume full of errors in punctuation, spelling and grammar can spell disaster. Make sure your document is free of inccorrectly spelled words, grammatical errors and inconsistent punctuation. Check the accuracy of dates, addresses, telephone numbers, and proper names. When you have completed proofreading, have a friend double check the document for you.
Dont's
Don't be intimidated.:-
Anyone can experience writers block. Writing a resume is not easy. A well-prepared and well-written resume will take time and more than one draft, but the rewards are worth all the effort.
Arbritraliy include an objective.:-
Don't include objectives just for the sake of including one. Use an objective only when you are specifically seeking a position in a prticular area such as sales management and will not look at any other opportunities. However, if you want flexibility in using your resume for a variety of positions, don't use an objective. Cover letters are much more effective at conveying your objective.
Overuse dialogue words.:-
Avoid overuse of words like responsible, mine, my, I, and also. These words can appear vague, give narrative overtones, and sound too conversational. Try to perform as much "tight writing" as possible by eliminating these types of words to keep the document crisp without losing the meaning.
Don't list references.:-
There is no need to list references on your resume. The only exception might be on a Curriculum Vitae for use outside the USA. A reference list should be developed and sent only when requested.

Top 10 Tips For Managing Six Sigma
By Ritesh Chatterjee
How does an organization manage the Six Sigma process for delivering outstanding Business Results? Ritesh Chatterjee provides his top 10 lessons learned for deploying Six Sigma within a business or organization.
1. Leadership/top management commitment is essential. Secure the Top management commitment by first training them. This training should consist of an introduction to Six Sigma, tools and techniques used, and the roles and responsibilities of the management as Champions. The Leadership team has to be totally convinced of the benefits of Six Sigma. In addition, executive management should form a Steering Committee which will now ensure that
1. Organizational goals are aligned with Six Sigma projects
2. Resources are planned for and roadblocks removed
3. A person to lead this effort in the organization is selected. S/he will be trained as a Black Belt and will report to the Steering Committee. They must select their best performing person for this job.
2. All leaders should be trained as Six Sigma Champions. This is normally a 2 day training session that ensures that the Champions learn to ask the right questions of Six Sigma practitioners. This group includes the Steering Committee, process owners, and functional managers (like Production Manager, Maintenance Manager, etc.).
3. Include Six Sigma planning within the business operating plan. Ensure the when the Operating Plan for the next year(s) is being made, Six Sigma Project savings become an input for that plan.
4. Select the right consultant to train your Belts. There are a lot of mediocre programs floating around being offered even by reputed training institutions. One point to remember is that you will be best trained by a Six Sigma practitioner (Black Belt or Master Black Belt) rather than an academic who will teach you only theory. A typical Black Belt training program is spread over 4-5 months, and a Black Belt will need to complete two projects before s/he is certified (which will typically take longer than 6 months). A Green Belt training program is spread over 4 months and requires one project for certification. At Owens Corning I have designed the White Belt (3 day) training program to help employees on the shop floor lead their own projects (though smaller in size and duration).
5. Ensure that the Return On Training Investment is at least 20 times. This can be done by good project definition and correct practitioner allocation.
6. Get the movement going at the shop floor level. Rather than having a few Black Belts or Green Belts doing projects all the time, train shop floor operators and supervisors in the use of tools and techniques (White Belt program). This way the ownership is theirs and they are doing the improvements on their own. Reward well the project leaders and their team members when they receive certification. Make it such that other people aspire to get this certification. The certified candidates should be adequately compensated during their annual performance review.
7. Create a certification process. Ensure that the certification process is rigorous and true. This will ensure that only after successful completion of projects and demonstrating proper use of tools/techniques, the practitioner candidate will get certified. The Functional Area Manager, Finance Leader and Six Sigma reviewer should sign on the certificate declaring that the benefits have actually started accruing.
8. Develop a mentoring process. Ensure that proper guidance/handholding is being done by experienced practitioners for the new candidates after their training. This will ensure that the course corrections are made regularly and the projects get completed on time.
9. Ensure financial validation of projects. Make sure that the Finance Leader is signing off on the project's actual savings. The finance department should do the reporting of the metrics and savings in the control phase of the projects. The project metrics should continue to be tracked after the project is declared completed. This tracking responsibility should be on the project leader or process owner if handed off by the project leader.
10. Never allow Six Sigma to be classified as a Quality Manager's job. A Quality Manager's role is distinct and s/he will not be in position to manage the Six Sigma process as for the entire business.

7 Tips For Moving To Self-Employment
By Tony Jacowski
What you must understand is that moving away from “traditional” employment entails changing your mentality. You need to make the transition from paycheck thinking and embrace profit thinking. This is perhaps may the hardest thing to do for those used to and brought up in a ‘safety’ mindset. Before you decide to start working for yourself, you must realize that a few months in the beginning can be very tough if you have not planned for the transition properly. Below are some of the painful aspects of moving to self-employment from employment and ways to cope with them.
Moving From A Job Culture to Self Employment
1. You should have enough money to cover your expenses in the near future. Get into the habit of keeping a close eye on your accounts. Petty expenses can run from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and you will run into trouble if you don’t account for every penny.
2. Constantly keeping track of correspondence and communications, vendors and customers in addition to managing your business (which is your sole responsibility), can run you crazy. Add to this the frustration of weak sales and cash flow. The only way out, if you can’t afford an assistant, is to slog it out, burning the midnight oil and getting up early the next morning. You will have to repeat this for the next few months. This may be tough, but you need to know exactly how things will be going in, especially at the beginning.
3. Resisting the desire to accept each order takes great determination. You want to make as much money as possible, but you shouldn’t overextend yourself, or make a deal that will be detrimental to your business in the long run. Have the strength to scrutinize every deal that comes your way, then decide if it is actually worth taking.
4. Seeing your cash flow be unpredictable can unnerve you initially. Try to keep your cool and don’t panic. Before you start your work at home business, you must have two things in place so you can ease the financial pressure. Number one: the lowest possible monthly bills; Number two: A viable contingency plan.
5. Legal matters and taxation are two areas for which you should hire an expert unless you are very experienced. These things often change without notice, and you will need professional representation.
6. You need to maintain separate accounts for personal and business transactions. Do not mix the two. If you do, you will make a mess of your finances. If you must borrow from your personal account, transfer the money instead of just spending it outright.
7. Protect yourself when it comes to business transactions. This is just common sense. It is harder to do when dealing with friends or family, but you must do it. If you have to, negotiate payment terms. But keep in mind that business is business and keep all transactions professional and make the terms clear. Set some limitations when dealing with your customers, whoever they are.
